Description:
The Thinking Lab was started in 2008. As it has grown, it has become best known for helping logical people maintain a positive, benevolent, constructive perspective on everything. A positive attitude is often associated with touchy-feely, woo-woo ideas. Thanks to the influence of Ayn Rand, I can explain a positive approach in terms of rational values and the objective needs of the mind.
In this free teaser for the Thinking Lab, Lin Zinser and I explain four key ideas we teach in the Thinking Lab that help you maintain a benevolent perspective. You will learn how you can:
- Motivate yourself through values, goals, and self-care rather than rules, duties, and self-criticism
- Sustain enthusiastic effort for an ambitious goal that is so long-range, daunting, or complicated that you know you’ll hit major setbacks along the way
- Choose a long-range goal you are passionate about when you are at a crossroads — whether you are starting out to choose a career, ready for a mid-life shift, or retired and looking to keep active
- Transform your relationships with other people for the better, without their needing to change
This last — transforming your relationships with others without their making changes — is emblematic of my whole approach. When you look at everything in the world in terms of values to be gained, you see the good in other people, you see the opportunities for achieving your goals, and put your results under your control.
My co-host on this call is Lin Zinser, who is on the staff of the Thinking Lab as a one-on-one coach for Thinking Lab members. Lin was trained as a lawyer, but left law to pursue activist goals. Among other projects, she was the director of public outreach for the Ayn Rand Institute for a number of years. She’s been a member of the Thinking Lab since the beginning.
Regarding becoming a coach for the Thinking Lab, Lin says: “I’m a fan of the Thinking Lab, not just because Jean has the best methods, but because she analyzes the methods and figures out how and why they work. This makes them so much more valuable. She has helped me clear up many confusions and misunderstandings in my own thinking. I’m excited to offer that kind of support for other ambitious members of the Thinking Lab who want to use Jean’s ideas, insights and techniques, tools and tips to be happy and productive.”
